About us

Norman Piette provide customers with building materials and services of assured quality in a friendly and efficient manner

The Past

Norman Piette’s history dates back to 1739, making it one of the oldest builders’ and timber merchants in the British Isles. Records exist which show that English oak was sawn in Guernsey and supplied to the Admiralty for the building of Lord Nelson’s flagship, HMS Victory. In the early part of the nineteenth century the company was still involved in shipbuilding, then an important island industry, with locally constructed vessels sailing the oceans of the world. Wooden greenhouses for the growing of grapes and tomatoes became a major feature of island life in the middle of that century, with timber being supplied in great volume by the company.

The Present

Throughout the twentieth century the fortunes of the company have been shaped by expansion within various sectors of the economy – horticulture, tourism, industry and commerce – as well as by demand for housing due to a broad socio-economic population expansion. Through acquisition and organic growth, the company structure was established. Norman Piette’s current business is that of general builder’ merchants, the largest and most professional such group in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, supplying materials for much of the recent development of St Peter Port as an international finance centre and meeting the demands for public buildings and social housing. Norman Piette is a member of the NP Group of Companies which includes Project Hire and Sales, KdeP Glass, Jecohomes, Norman Piette EcoHomes, Annandale and Blanchard’s Building Supplies in Alderney.

The Future

We aim to live up to our Mission Statement. We keep up-to-date with new technology and current events in the industry and have excellent stock-retrieval and management systems. We are always on the lookout for new products and services which in turn enhance our efficiency and customer service.

Paul Rogers

CEO

Paul Rogers

CEO

I have been in family owned Builders merchants for over 35 years now, so I was delighted to be offered the Commercial Director’s position on the Board of Norman Piette nearly six years ago.

Having led the team in redeveloping the new site layout to a very high standard, I became Managing Director last year. The brief was to drive the existing NP sales forward whilst creating extra business by searching out new products in new markets. The challenge is immense, the satisfaction is even more so.

Guernsey is an idyllic island, having never lived near the sea before and having always had a long commute to work, I will never take for granted the benefits of the lifestyle the move from the UK has afforded me.

Craig Gontier

Timber Mill Manager

Craig Gontier

Timber Mill Manager

Craig joined in late 2003 as a truss fabricator back in the days before EcoHomes, cutting and fabricating trusses and timber frame panels. After 4 years a job opportunity arose within the timber mill which Craig accepted, becoming timber server in 2007. He thoroughly enjoyed the role, learning a great deal of hardwood knowledge. In 2010, the manager approached Craig regarding a machinist job which he took and loved every minute of, especially making cutters for new profiles and experimenting with the timber.

In 2012, Craig was promoted to mill supervisor and also took on additional duties, including the buying side of timber. When NP launched a new computer system, Craig was heavily involved with staff training, which included visits to other Group businesses including Annandale and Blanchards in Alderney. He then took part in an 18 month in-house development programme, which gave him skills and business knowledge which allowed him to transition to mill manager in 2015. Craig now manages two timber departments and is looking forward to growing within the business and taking the timber side of the business to another level.

Richard Dudley

Sales Representative

Born in Wales I moved to Guernsey in 1989 and joined Norman Piette in the late 90’s, initially in the Joinery Store and then as a Sales Negotiator.  In 2006 I relocated to the Isle of Wight working for Travis Perkins as an Assistant Branch Manager and then Branch Manager.

The great way of life in Guernsey tempted my family back in 2014, where I again worked for Norman Piette, this time on the Trade Counter. Since 2015 I have been out on the roads as a Sales Rep, visiting customers and driving business. It’s a challenging and fulfilling role, especially with the current economic challenges.

Away from working life you’ll find me somewhere cheering on the Welsh rugby team, usually with a pint in hand!
